Suran Song is an Ocean County-based performance artist/poet. Stag is the electic local band who backs her rock ‘n’ roll gigs. Together, they’re Suran Song in Stag, who will celebrate the release of their independent debut disc, “Shiny Objects,” at 10 p.m. on Oct. 31 at the Budapest Lounge, 234 Somerset St., in New Brunswick.
Produced by Ween drummer Claude Coleman, the 10-song CD is surrealistically dreamy, yet rooted in the absurdities of materialism. Stag vomits eerie grunge, frolics through ’60s-inspired garage rock, strums quirky acoustics and floats through a haunting, psychedelic wash.
The resulting mix makes Song’s observations about society’s lack of priorities sound like a cross between the hi-fi avant garde of Laurie Anderson and lo-fi fury of Liz Phair. Particularly outstanding is the cross-country escape of “Router,” the consumer nightmare of “Kissing Judice” and the Orwellian reflection of “Pamela’s Secret.”
Live, Song utilizes “action and images” made from stilts, video and slide projections. Given the fact that the evening also will serve as a Halloween costume party, the band’s visuals will be wild.
The bash also will feature Alice B. Talkless.
