Downsized to a duo, Suran Song in Stag is as penetrating, yet off beat as ever. Suran Song’s poetic anthems are sparsely accompanied by Stag bassist/pianist Bil Weis, resulting in a minimalist vibe reminiscent of Liz Phair’s debut. Plenty of distortion makes up for any lack of personnel. Fortunately, Suran Song’s social satire, much of which recalls June Jordan’s feminist poems, could stand on its own as spoken word.

Whether exploring the dangers of sexism (track 2, “Female Rape Jury”), racism (track 3 “Bad Faith Inclusion”), or obsession (track 6 “Tryst Trying Trust”), Suran Song’s clever wordplay chisels at the absurd to tap out the gap between a blind society and its shrinking visionaries.
