The lascivious L.U.V.’s return to AS220
with Suran Song in Stag
They’ll be splitting the bill with Stag a similarly electrifying, if a little more cerebral group led by vocalist Suran Song. As a NYC Riot Grrl in the early ’90s, Song cut her teeth on performance art (literally, ask her about the Honey Box piece) before moving into the avant-rock arena.
Those of us who’ve heard Song’s agit-pop band, perhaps last Sunday on Sean Langford’s 90.3 WRIU Live Show, already know that her hook-filled tunes are earnest and intelligent. But the radio only talks to the ears. To imagine a precedent for the visual impact of Song’s multi-media live show, you’ll have to dream up some wacky parallel where a stilt-walking Laurie Anderson with the dangerous vocal intimacy of Guyville-era Liz Phair is the lead singer for the Jam; where flux-artist Joseph Beuys creates intriguing action art imagery for a P.J. Harvey tour benefiting Adbusters.
Soleil Moon Frye’s punky Purr Manifesto and techno diva due Velvet Babies open. This $5 bill is eclectic, bizarre and mind blowing that it could only happen at AS220.
