Suran Song in Stag – Pure Agitator, Cruel Music
On their new 10 song release, “Pure Agitator” Suran Song in Stag churn out an impressive cast of tunes employing mostly just bass and vocals. Certainly, their approach is unconventional but vocalist Suran Song has a fine voice, pure and with great range of pitch and emotion, while bassist William P-Funk Weis III fuzzes along creating rich distorted textures. The rest of the band was told to close the drawers and their bags, because Song and Weis seem to be very aware of each other and fill out the sound beautifully without needing more musicians to fill the spectrum. Song’s lyrics are interesting too, playing upon thought and sound (“Tryst Trying Trust”) most enjoyably. The back cover is Bowie’s “Star”. Not for every pair of ears, but very interesting, yes.
