Jersey Beat - Issue, #64, Winter 1999

Suran in Stag has stripped it's sound to the bare essentials on this new release --bits of piano and drums turn up here and there, but for the most of these 10 tracks, the only instuments are Suran's incandescent vocals and Bil Weis' electric bass. The results create an otherworldly sound that both tickles the ear and teases the mind, with tounge tripping word play ("Tryst Tring Trust" track 6) and beguiling melodies ("Dust Crush" track 7). Kudos to Bil Weis, who performs tricks on the bass akin to Sonic Youth's groundbreaking use of de-tuned guitars. The album begins by slyly re-inventing a Fugazi song, and ends with a brillant rendition of David Bowie's "Star" which couldn't be more appropos: like Ziggy Stardust, Suran Song in Stag plays rock-n-roll as it might be imagined on other planets.
